Looking for energy efficient hangar lights for your aircraft hangars? We know that airplane and helicopter maintenance hangars present unique lighting challenges for those looking for high bay lighting solutions. Aircraft hangars still using the old, inefficient and energy wasting Metal Halide as hangar lights, now have a great opportunity to install Induction Lighting and not only reduce the monthly and annual electric bill immediately, but the Induction lights significantly improve the workplace environment.

Energy Efficient Hangar Lights

Energy Efficient Hangar Lights

With the pressure on budgets everywhere, many operators of aviation repair stations and FBOs are looking at lighting upgrades to save money and lower energy usage. Replacing HIDs with Induction Lighting gives a more energy efficient building and further reduces the FBOs carbon footprint. Made in the USA, Induction Lighting is approved by many utility companies for rebates and incentives. Replacing a High Bay 1000w Metal Halide  with a 400w Induction or a 400w parking lot Metal Halide with a 175w Induction Light yields tremendous energy savings for the aviation repair stations and FBO operator with hangar lights and the utility company.

Although LEDs garner a lot of interest for those loking for metal halide alternatives, induction lighting’s cost-effectiveness and long life make it a better solution for high bay lighting applications. With a rated life of 100,000 hours — twice as long as LEDs — and purchase costs that are less than half that of LEDs, Induction lighting for airplane hangars is a practical, workhorse technology for applications like exterior lighting and high bay fixtures in aircraft maintenance hangars.

A 200W induction lamp is well-suited for both outdoor and indoor large area lighting. Exterior applications range from auto dealer parking lots and street lighting to aircraft maintenance hangars, gas station canopies, tunnel wall packs, tennis courts and sports stadiums. Indoors they are ideal for high-bay fixtures in warehouses, retail, gyms or convention centers. They can be utilized in a wide variety of fixtures suited for pole, ceiling and wall-mounted applications like hangar lights.

A 200W induction lamp is a comparable replacement for a 360W Metal Halide or a 400W HPS (high pressure sodium) lamp, delivering better light while using about half the power. Equally important, one induction lamp will last for ten years or more, while an HPS lamp will have to be replaced about three times and a Metal Halide lamp as many as five times over 10 years. That adds up to very substantial savings on materials and labor considering the high cost of servicing hard-to-reach fixtures.

Induction lamps are long-life, energy saving alternatives to HID lamps, well suited for applications where fixtures are hard to reach, whether outdoors, like street lighting, or indoors, aircraft hangars.

With a 100,000 hour-rated life, high lumen output, minimal lumen depreciation, outstanding color rendering, and instant-on features, our induction lights provide a versatile, high-efficiency, low-maintenance, long-term lighting solution.

XJet (KAPA), 3rd. in Aviation International News annual FBO Survey of Top 10 FBO’s in America for 2011. www.xjetworld.com , a member based club offering unrivaled service and facilities.  The XJet Induction Lamp retrofit encompassed 2 large hangers and acres of ramp.

In the Spring of 2011, Green Energy Solutions, Inc (GES) installed two ramp lights. Replacing 1500w MH with 150w Induction.  The project includes replacing all 8 outdoor ramp lights, retrofitting existing 400w MH with 200w Induction hi bay hangar lights in both hangers ( total 114 fixtures) as well as retrofitting the garage lighting and parking lot lights.

On many occasions, Tom Perkins, VP of XJet, has commented on the number of visiting pilots who upon arriving at the XJet ramp will ask about the new lights.  Often saying how they were much easier on the eyes than the others and asking why don’t you do the rest of them?

The project totals for XJet are equally impressive. Saving more than $26,000 a year in utilities ($2,200 mo.) and $20,000 in rebates resulting in a payback of 27 months!

The first Green Energy Solutions, Inc, (GES) FBO hangar lights project was the Mountain Aviation Induction Lamp Retrofit in Broomfield, Colorado.  Mountain Aviation, www.mountainaviation.com , an aircraft maintenance and charter company operates a fleet of turboprops, Citation jets as well as a Falcon 50 and a Gulfstream G400. Mountain Aviation is proud to support the Colorado and Wyoming Donor Alliance, flying life saving organ and tissue transplant missions.

Their maintenance hanger at KBJC, equipped with sixteen 1000w MH lamps was very costly and they contacted Green Energy Solutions, Inc. to help them save money and provide a better working environment for their team of aircraft technicians.  We conducted an audit of the facility and proposed a solution which would save over $400 per month on their electric bill!

That solution was Induction lighting, which running 12 hours a day will last for twenty (20) years. No more disruption of the operation to change burned out lights or ballasts every few years; moving aircraft, renting a lift to reach the lights, etc.

This lighting Retrofit qualified for a rebate from Xcel for over $4000 and helped produced a very attractive ROI of only 26 months!
